Sooner the better. If your hard drive has already crashed, avoid attempting to recover the data yourself, as doing so may cause further damage or lead to permanent data loss. Since hard drives spin with speeds anywhere from 7,200 to 15,000 rpm, a failed head can corrupt a lot of data very quickly.
